Golf Instructor Welsh killed in auto accident

LAKEWAY - Monica Welsh, 31, former assistant golf professional at the Hills of Lakeway and Onion Creek Club, was killed when her vehicle overturned here, state authorities said Sunday.

A Department of Public Safety dispatcher said Welsh was traveling east on Lakeway Boulevard about 8:30 p.m. Saturday when she apparently lost control of her vehicle as she was attempting to negotiate a curve near Lakeway Drive. The vehicle skidded off the right side of the road and overturned, the dispatcher said. She was not wearing a seatbelt, he said.

Welsh was an assistant pro at Onion Creek Club from 1982 - 84 and joined the Hills of Lakeway in March 1988. Since resigning as Hills of Lakeway assistant pro last summer, Welsh had been an instructor for the Dave Pelz Short Game School at the Lakeway Academy of Golf.

A graduate of Crockett High School, Welsh played golf at Texas A&M from 1978-82 and led the Aggies to the Southwest Conference championship as a senior.

Welsh earned all-SWC honors and was named A&M's most valuable player in 1981 & '82. She was the individual runner-up at the SWC Tournament in 1979 and '82.

Rosary will be 7 p.m. today at Harrell Funeral Home, 4435 Frontier Trail. Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 10 a.m. at St. Peter the Apostle Church, 4600 E. Ben White.
